THROUGH MICHAEL JACKSON'S DEATH, MTV FINALLY REMEMBERS THEIR CREATIVE / MUSIC VIDEO ROOTS.
Friday, June 26, 2009 at 9:49AM So, Michael Jackson passes away and in their tribute to him, MTV finally magically remembers that they USED to be a MUSIC VIDEO station.
Since word of his death yesterday afternoon, I would wager that MTV has played more music videos (all MJ of course) than in the last 15 years combined. Not only is that telling on how MTV has devolved into trash television (see here for the indication of the next round of MTV filth) but it is also telling on the volume of work that Michael produced that the station can play his work non-stop with no repeats for hours on end. He had many personal troubles, to be sure, but he was a wellspring of creative brilliance that has inspired millions.
Now we enter the non-stop cycle of tribute interviews, footage (music video, past live performances, and otherwise) and coverage of memorial services and such worldwide.
Doesn't MTV owe Michael Jackson EVERYTHING??
Yes.
MTV owes its very existence to those such as Michael Jackson who spent the time and efforts pouring their creative genius into highly choreographed, slickly directed and EPIC videos. I remain true to my previous statement that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" has the best choreography in the history of music videos and nothing will unseat that for the rest of history. None. ESPECIALLY, given the fact that MTV doesn't even direct their current programming toward music videos. What reason does anyone have to really come up with anything new and brilliant if it will only be bookended or smothered in disgusting programming? And now, the only thing that MTV can come up with to subject our population to is disgusting, degrading, trash "reality" television?
Now we have a younger generation that believes they should live vacariously through these tools on TV who just want five minutes (if that) of fame as opposed to being inspired by the likes of Thriller.
Unfortunately, even now, MJ coverage is being interrupted by commercials for The Real World (of which the title is a contradiction in terms in and of itself) and other trash with people discussing who is going to hook up with whom.
If you waste even a second of your precious God-given time watching "reality television" on ANY channel for that matter, then you need to get your head examined and immediately take a long, serious, hard look at your life. What have you become and where are you headed?
MTV which was built on creativity has subverted creativity by watering down our youth, corrupting expectations about life and turning many lives into degrading spectacles. Spectacles of those who are first seeking fame and fortune rather than first being true to their creativity and THEN seeing where that creativity will take them. If you "make it" on something other than your creativity, then what will you stand on when your "house-of-cards-success" is gone. Just ask any former reality show member.
If God is indeed creative and if you are indeed created in His image, then you have a great measure of creativity to offer. You owe it to yourself. And you owe it to me. You owe it to the world. Or what will have been made from your life? How will you have made an impact? Who will you have touched?
If you don't believe that, then go on about your business and try to fill your void(s) another way.
You will die. What will you leave behind?
Leave the TV for the uninspired and unmotivated. Your life is worth more than that.
Have a strong day.
Bravo out.
