Overheard recently in the gym: “I’m not supposed to do cardio, I’m too thin already.”
Uh.
First of all, the amount of cardio that she (and you) most likely would be doing would not be enough to really affect overall body composition THAT much. Yes, cardio can help burn fat when done correctly. But unless you’re Michael Phelps and burning 12,000 calories each day performing Olympic level cardiovascular conditioning – or, ok, even someone who is putting plenty of good cardio training time in (circuit and / or interval training) – not the typical average cardio session seen performed in many gyms across the land – you’re not going to affect your body composition that much unless it is circuit training or interval training.
You pick up dumbbells and do bicep curls to exercise your biceps - amongst other auxillary muscles. But you can't take your heart out of your chest and put it on a treadmill by itself for an hour, so, how else are you going to work the muscle that is your heart without doing some kind of cardiovascular exercise? Even if the exercise isn't that intense, you owe it to your heart to give it a reason to pump... aside
from simply keeping you alive of course.
Your arteries have a muscular effect as well with pushing blood out through your body. How else are you going to get those arterial walls moving optimally without moving yourself?
Exactly.
So get moving. There's no rest for the lean.
Have a strong day, cardio-ers.
