Smith machines force your body / joints into one plane of motion. But here's a secret tip: Your body doesn't work in only one plane of motion.
For total body wellness, your total body works (and NEEDS to be worked) in and through multiple planes. The Smith Machine will NOT help with this.
Don't trust a personal trainer that uses one. If you want to be truly strong all over, that is. If not, then keep on keepin' on.
Pick up some dumbbells, bands, balls, kettlebells, all with proper instruction of course, or just use your body weight. And leave the smith machines for hanging laundry and/or doing reverse push-ups and / or melting down to use the steel from the Smith Machine to create some actual free-weights worth using.
You'll be doing better than most who are lifting too much and / or lifting too much incorrectly.
